TIM'S TOP THREE THINGS TO DO TO REACH YOUR GOALS FOR '99

With the New Year rapidly approaching, thoughts are turning to New Year's Resolutions and personal goals for 1999. As this readership knows, I am a firm believer in strengthening one's foundation as a necessary step in the attainment of any change or goal (see the last edition of Salubrations). The following suggestions are offered as guidelines to smooth the path to wherever your dreams and desires may take you.

  1. Get clear on what you really, really, REALLY, really want.
Make sure the goal you are setting or the change you want to make is in integrity with who you really are. Will the change allow you to express your true values, or is it a reflection of some "could" or "should" from the past? (Although we've all been potty trained a long time ago it's amazing how much we keep "should-ing" all over ourselves!) Is this goal congruent with your major life goals, or just another detour?

  2. Simplify and organize your life.
Once you are sure of what you want to do, create the time and space required to accomplish the goal easily. Eliminate current irritations and distractions, and get complete with current tasks and unfinished personal business. Delegate or get rid of anything that doesn't absolutely have to be on your plate right now. Clean out your desk at work and your bedroom closet at home. Create a sense of space and reserve around you. Get on a routine daily schedule that puts you in control and start taking extremely good care of yourself.

  3. Set SMART Goals.
Break you goal into small do-able steps or increments that you can accomplish readily. Make each of these sub-goals SMART goals:
  • Specific: Know unambiguously what step you are taking and why.
  • Measurable: Each step has an objective, observable end-point.
  • Appropriate: Each step is consistent with the big goal, in context with the rest of your life, and congruent with who you are.
  • Realistic: Each step is reasonable; not too easy or too difficult to accomplish given the circumstances.
  • Time: A time frame for completing each step is planned and recorded on your schedule.

What's that you say? Haven't planned a New Years resolution yet? Try this one on for size. Ask yourself, "what single change or shift could I make right now that would have the greatest amount of impact on the quality of my day-to-day life?"

There you have it. Now, nothing left to it but to do it!
If you or any of your acquaintances have trouble establishing appropriate goals, planning for their execution, or in completing them, feel free to take advantage of a free consultation (see below).

In conclusion, I am extending my most heartfelt wishes to all of you for a joyous holiday season and for great good fortune in the New Year!
